Recently, a new ‘trend’ started on Facebook. Stigmatic mages of supposedly ‘not so beautiful’ individuals are shared around with the caption “I’m looking for (persons name), can you tag him/her please”.
Now, while many are having a jolly good laugh about this, I, among many other socially-conscious people, see this as modern day bullying and body shaming. Many tend to forget that these aren’t just pictures. These are pictures of actual people.
There are even photos of burn-victims, individuals with down syndrome (DS), victims of anorexia, victims of obesity being used in the ‘trend’. I can’t for the life of me, understand how someone’s disability or problem can become such a big fat joke for others.
Has technology made us so disconnected and easy now to laugh at someone thinking it’s no big deal? These are people too. We have never even met these people in our life, nor do we know what they are going through.
What happened to respect and love? The two founding pillars of humanity seems to only crumble more and more each year.
Imagine if that were you in the pictures being used in the trend. Imagine someone using a picture of your family or loved ones in this trend. How would you feel?
We now live in a world being torn apart by feuding families, warring nations, religious militants, natural calamities and economic instability- do we really want to tear the world further by welcoming this trend to our doorsteps?
