KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahatir Mohamad has labelled Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos a “crybaby” over the punching insicdent at a mall here last weekend.
In his speech to the thousands of demonstrators at the Bersih 5 rally today, the former premier sad all those present ‘should feel proud that they were not like Jamal’.
“We want peace, we are not Jamal. He gets punched in the nose once and starts crying,” he told the demonstrators, who cheered loudly in approval.
The Parti Pribumi chairman also poked fun at the Red Shirts leader for his group’s gimmicks that purportedly showcase their bravery.
“He claims to be brave. Brave enough to be arrested (by police). But once he is arrested, he would beg,” Dr Mahathir said.
He also praised Malaysians who had turned up in numbers for the rally, and urged them not to be cowed by attempts to stop them from speaking out against the government.
“Let them put us in jail. There is no jail that would be big enough to detain all of us here today,” he said.
The former prime minister added that in his 70 years of politics, he had never seen a rally this big.
“My body is weak, but my spirit is strong. Strengthen your hearts and your resolve,” he added.
Dr Mahathir was making his first official appearance at a Bersih rally as a leader of the Opposition after briefly attending the Bersih 4 rally last year.
