If money was the only thing you needed to save someone you love, what would you be willing to do to save that one person that you hold so dearly to your heart? Would you work overtime? Take multiple jobs? Sell your belongings? One brave girl in China crossed the treshold and set aside all social stigmas to save her own brother.
Recently, a 19-year-old girl made headlines in China after she boarded on the Hangzhou Metro holding a signboard reading that she was selling her virginity for 200,000 yuan (RM127,777). On the signboard also stated that she had an official certificate from the hospital proving her abstinence.
At first glance of the story, one may think crudely of the girl, but fact of the matter is, the story behind the ‘offer’ is soul-wrenching to say the least.
Xu, from the Yunnan province of China, explained in her signboard crafted out from old cardboard and a few markers, that she needed to raise funds for her 23-year-old brother’s leukaemia treatment. It goes on to explain that Xu’s brother was diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening disease three years ago. Fortunately, her brother’s doctors didn’t have to look far to find a donor as Xu’s bone marrow was a match with his. However, even after the transplant, her brother experienced some negative effects and was in serious need of treatment- treatment that cost 200,000 yuan (RM127,777), and their family was already neck-deep in debts after paying for her brother’s transplant.
The signboard piqued the interest from many commuters and also the unwanted attention of the police who later escorted her off the train back to the police station.
There, a distraught Xu explained to officers that her brother was being treated in a local hospital nearby and she had recently arrived to Hangzhou earlier this month in an attempt to help raise money to pay for her brother’s treatments, NetEase reports.
Reporters found the girl’s brother at the hospital just like she said. He looked frail, thin, weak, had discoloured lips, and was covered in dark patches. The doctor confirmed that Xu’s brother’s body was breaking down, succumbing to his illness. His fingernails were falling off, couldn’t even shed any tears anymore, and had developed a number of other diseases.
The patient confirmed Xu’s claims, admitting that he was her brother, adding that he had another two other younger sisters.
“I can’t put the cost for this treatment on my medical insurance, I guess she heard that and came to Hangzhou,” he explained. “And now I know how foolish she is.” he said
Xu’s brother, who was already down in the dumps, told the local media that he felt horrible for being such a burden to his family and that he wants to return home soon so that his sister can get back to studying.
Officers explained to Xu that despite her sad story and good intentions, what she was trying to do was wrong. She responded saying that she knew it was wrong from the start but didn’t know how else to help her brother.
Every year, thousands of families in China face the same situation as Xu. Without sufficient medical coverage nor money, they are forced to resort to selling flowers, hugs and blow-up sex dolls to raise money to help pay for their loved ones’ high medical bills.
However, that being said, this is without doubt one of the most soul-crushing stories we’ve ever heard or seen.
We send forth our best wishes to Xu and her family in their endeavour to gather enough money to pay for her brother’s treatment, and a speedy & full recovery to Xu’s brother. – The Inscriber
